All Facilities Open for Users

1st Forum on NSF-DMR Materials Innovation Platforms

PARADIM Highlight #52—Education and Outreach (2022)

Darrell Schlom (PARADIM) and Joan Redwing (2DCC-MIP)

Materials Innovation Platforms (MIPs) are user facilities dedicated to accelerating materials discovery by providing a community of practitioners with access to cutting edge tools in theory, synthesis, and characterization and the ability to share knowledge effortlessly. MIPs are funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and are freely available to users from universities and national laboratories in the United States—from scientists just beginning their careers to seasoned experts—from all institutions.

The inaugural two MIPs in inorganic electronic materials were founded in 2016: 2DCC and PARADIM. Two additional platforms in biomaterials were created in 2020: BioPACIFIC MIP and GlycoMIP.

The event on December 1, 2021, jointly hosted by 2DCC and PARADIM during the annual Fall Meeting of the Materials Research Society (MRS), was aimed at past, current, and future users of MIPs and showcased recent success stories of MIP users and the unique capabilities of MIP national user facilities.

The forum was attended by over 130 individuals (~60 onsite in Boston and 74 via Zoom webinar) and gave participants the chance to network, share their experiences, discuss project ideas with scientists of all four MIPs, and learn more about upcoming opportunities and modes of access at BioPACIFIC MIP and GlycoMIP.

Details of the forum including recordings of the headline presentations are available at https://www.paradim.org/MIP_Forum_MRS_2021.

What has been achieved:

The 1st MIP Forum was an official event of the 2021 Fall Meeting of MRS and advertised on the conference’s webpage: https://mrs.org/meetings-events/fall-meetings-exhibits/2021-mrs-fall-meeting/meeting-events/professional-development/nsf-dmr-materials-innovation-platform-forum. The half-day event was comprised of 6 success stories presented by external users of 2DCC and PARADIM, 2 presentations covering the 2020 MIPs, 25 Flash talks highlighting recent research at the 2016 MIPs and upcoming upgrades to their capabilities, and included opening and closing remarks by MIP and NSF leadership.

Acknowledgments:

The event was supported by the National Science Foundation via DMREF 2D-Data Framework Workshop grant no. DMR-1904168 and the NSF-MIP PARADIM under Cooperative Agreements DMR-1539918 and DMR-2039380.
